Title Shot: Into the Shark Tank of Mixed Martial Arts

Front CoverTitle Shot is the journey every sports fan dreams of. After meeting professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter BJ Penn in December 2006, I decided to learn more about this misunderstood sport and the men who fueled it. I wanted to understand the motivation to fight and why the athletes were portrayed so unfairly by a mass media that focused on the seedier side of their lives instead of their true personas. I wanted to delve into the minds of the men who devoted their lives to training for that one day when they could enter the cage and slug it out with another man. I hit the road in 2007, living in five of the top MMA training camps in the world, sitting ringside and going backstage at live fights, and hanging out at the toughest tournament the sport had to offer, chronicling the adventure with a stiff upper lip even when it was swollen. I detail the relationship between the fighter, fan, and media and reveal how promotion trumps personality. I also detail something I was surprised to learn-the incredible similarity between professional fighting and the U.S. Army. Laced with sarcasm, humor, and a touch of daredevil bravado, Title Shot delivers candid one-on-one moments with some of the top names of an edgy sport, including UFC President Dana White. Whether you’re a hardcore MMA junkie or a casual fan, Title Shot has something for everyone.

Jackson’s MMA, The Stand Up Game

JMMA Final Cover smallJackson’s Mixed Martial Arts: The Stand Up Game is a collaboration between myself and MMA guru Greg Jackson. It’s an instructional book that focuses on Jackson’s fighting style, honed from years of trial and error growing up in a rough part of Albuquerque, New Mexico and perfected in the cages and rings of MMA. Greg was raised by pacifist parents who instilled in him the need to help other people, so this book is his way of teaching what he knows-self defense-to those in need. Of course it’s also focused at the professional fighter so it has something for everyone. Jackson’s MMA covers all aspects of fighting on your feet, from basic strikes, to combinations, takedowns, and the always dangerous Muay Thai clinch. There’s also a chapter on how to develop a fight strategy and a chapter on streetfighting.

Jackson’s MMA, The Ground Game

JMMA 2 Cover smallThe second book on Greg Jackson’s fighting style focuses on how to win when a fight goes to the ground. Greg reveals his techniques from every guard position (full, half, butterfly, spider, downed, and sit up guard) and then shows how to finish a fight from the full mount, side mount, and rear mount. We also included a chapter on pre and post fight nutrition by acclaimed MMA nutritionist P.R. Cole. There are plenty of grappling books out there to choose from, but Jackson’s techniques have been proven time and again by some of the best fighters in the world.

Dark World, Into the Shadows with the Lead Investigator of the Ghost Adventures Crew

DW Cover
It’s easy to say ghosts exist or don’t exist. Anyone can do that. Trying to figure out the why or what is a different story. Paranormal investigator Zak Bagans, host of the popular Travel Channel series Ghost Adventures, pulls from his years of experience with paranormal activities and unexplained phenomena to provide an evenhanded look at a divisive subject. In Dark World , regardless of whether you believe in the afterlife or not, Zak does his best to find and share answers to the phenomena that people encounter. He wants you to experience a haunting through his eyes: to feel what it’s like to be scared, freaked out, pushed, cold, sluggish, whispered-at and touched by an ethereal being or attacked by a demonic spirit. But beyond simply experiencing these events, Zak is looking for the reasons behind them, searching for answers to the unanswered questions. Addressing all the major issues and theories of the field in an impartial way, Dark World is a must read for paranormal enthusiasts, those who don’t believe and anyone who’s ever wondered about things that go bump in the night.

Dark World made the New York Times Bestseller List on October 2nd, 2011!

The Comfort Station (Sep, 2013)

Final Cover1942. The thirty-second year of Japanese occupation in Korea and tens of thousands of young women have disappeared from the peninsula. Like so many others, Ki-Hwa Kim’s parents imposed a lifelong seclusion on their only daughter, but a tragic error in judgment unraveled their cautious plan.
Forced into sexual slavery as a ‘comfort woman’ for the Japanese Army, Ki-Hwa is shipped to the South Pacific island fortress of Rabaul to be the mistress of a legendary Cavalry Officer while the Allied forces pummel the island from the air and sea.
Life in a comfort station is brutal and the hardships are compounded during a military siege. Once a protected farm girl, Ki-Hwa discovers people are not who they seem and must find the strength to resist the mighty and unforgiving Empire. When an imposter threatens to bring the comfort women’s carefully laid plans crashing down, she’s forced to make an impossible choice.

Reverse Polarity (2014)

What if we had the ability to harness the magnetosphere? Think about it – if we could ride inside the magnetic field that surrounds the earth the same way a submarine rides in water, then the possibilities are endless. Flying cars would set the transportation industry on its ass and put millions of people out of work. Cities and countries could be built and parked over international waters where they make their own laws. Now imagine you’re the person who makes this incredible discovery. Reverse Polarity is about a housewife who suddenly discovers this technology that changes the world, possibly irreversibly.
